A whimsical dessert featuring a soft top, creamy middle, and gooey strawberry layer that looks and tastes impressive.
Ingredients
- 1 box white or vanilla cake mix (about 15.25 oz)
- 2 large eggs
- 1 stick unsalted butter, melted
- 1 package cream cheese, softened (8 oz)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 pound powdered sugar (about 3.5 to 4 cups)
- 1 can strawberry pie filling (21 oz) or strawberry topping
- Pinch of salt (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F.
- In a bowl, mix cake mix, eggs, and melted butter until thick.
- Press the mixture into a greased 9×13 baking dish to form the base layer.
- In another bowl, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth.
- Add vanilla, powdered sugar, and a pinch of salt, mixing until creamy.
- Spoon the cream cheese mixture over the base layer.
- Drop strawberry pie filling on top in spoonfuls and lightly swirl if preferred.
- Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, until the edges look set but the center still jiggles slightly.
- Cool completely, then chill for at least 2 hours before slicing.
Notes
For clean slices, cut when the cake is cold and let the pieces sit at room temperature for 10 minutes before serving.
