Description
French Onion Chicken Orzo Casserole combines caramelized onions, tender chicken, creamy orzo, and melted Gruyere cheese into one comforting, flavor-packed dinner that’s perfect for busy weeknights or family gatherings.
Ingredients
- 1.5 lbs boneless, skinless chicken thighs or chicken breast, cut into bite-sized pieces
- 3 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 1 cup orzo pasta
- 4 cups chicken broth
- 1/2 cup dry white wine
- 1 cup Gruyere cheese, shredded
- 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/4 cup heavy cream (optional)
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Heat olive oil and butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook the sliced onions until deeply caramelized.
- Add the chicken and cook until browned. Stir in the garlic and dried thyme and cook for 1 minute.
- Pour in the white wine and chicken broth, then bring to a simmer.
- Stir in the orzo and cook until just al dente.
- Mix in the heavy cream if using, then transfer everything to a baking dish.
- Top with the Gruyere and Parmesan cheeses.
- Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 20-25 minutes until bubbly and golden brown.
- Let the casserole rest for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
Take your time caramelizing the onions for the richest flavor. Avoid overcooking the orzo since it will continue cooking in the oven. Fresh thyme can be substituted for dried thyme if preferred.
