Description

Delightful pastries filled with tender meat and fresh vegetables, perfect for a cozy fall meal.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour for a gluten-free version)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, chilled and diced
  • 5-7 tablespoons ice water
  • 1 cup diced beef (or halal chicken)
  • 1 medium potato, peeled and diced
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup diced carrot
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme (or 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • A splash of Worcestershire sauce (ensure it’s halal)

Instructions

  1. Combine the flour and salt in a mixing bowl.
  2. Add chilled, diced butter to the flour mixture and rub it in until it resembles breadcrumbs.
  3. Gradually add ice water, mixing until the dough comes together. Avoid overworking the dough.
  4. Shape the dough into a ball, wrap it in cling film, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  5. In a large mixing bowl, combine diced beef (or halal chicken), potato, onion, carrot, and thyme.
  6. Season the mixture with salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce.
  7. Preheat your oven to 400ยฐF (200ยฐC).
  8. Roll out the chilled pastry on a floured surface to about 1/8-inch thickness.
  9. Cut circles of pastry, about 6 inches in diameter.
  10. Place a spoonful of filling on one half of each pastry circle. Fold the other half over and crimp the edges to seal.
  11. Place the pasties on a lined baking sheet and brush with beaten egg.
  12. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown.
  13. Allow to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Chill your ingredients to create flaky pastry. Don’t overstuff to prevent bursting.
