Delightful pastries filled with tender meat and fresh vegetables, perfect for a cozy fall meal.
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour for a gluten-free version)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, chilled and diced
- 5-7 tablespoons ice water
- 1 cup diced beef (or halal chicken)
- 1 medium potato, peeled and diced
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1/2 cup diced carrot
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme (or 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- A splash of Worcestershire sauce (ensure it’s halal)
Instructions
- Combine the flour and salt in a mixing bowl.
- Add chilled, diced butter to the flour mixture and rub it in until it resembles breadcrumbs.
- Gradually add ice water, mixing until the dough comes together. Avoid overworking the dough.
- Shape the dough into a ball, wrap it in cling film, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine diced beef (or halal chicken), potato, onion, carrot, and thyme.
- Season the mixture with salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce.
- Preheat your oven to 400ยฐF (200ยฐC).
- Roll out the chilled pastry on a floured surface to about 1/8-inch thickness.
- Cut circles of pastry, about 6 inches in diameter.
- Place a spoonful of filling on one half of each pastry circle. Fold the other half over and crimp the edges to seal.
- Place the pasties on a lined baking sheet and brush with beaten egg.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown.
- Allow to cool slightly before serving.
Notes
Chill your ingredients to create flaky pastry. Don’t overstuff to prevent bursting.
