Description
A delightful Air Fryer Blooming Onion serves as a show-stopping appetizer with crispy, golden petals that will wow your guests this fall.
Ingredients
- 1 large Vidalia onion (or a sweet onion of your choice)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour for a gluten-free version)
- 1 cup breadcrumbs (panko is ideal for extra crunch)
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tablespoon milk (or plant-based milk if desired)
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Cooking spray (or olive oil spray)
Instructions
- Prepare the Onion: Peel the outer skin of your onion, trim the top, and slice off the root side to keep it intact. Make 12-16 cuts downward into the onion, forming petals.
- Soak the Onion: Fill a bowl with cold water and soak the onion for about an hour.
- Mix the Coating: In a large bowl, combine the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper. In another bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk.
- Coat the Onion: Drain and shake the onion to remove excess water. Dip it in the flour mixture, then in the egg mixture, followed by the breadcrumbs.
- Preheat the Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 375ยฐF (190ยฐC) for about 5 minutes.
- Cook the Onion: Spray the onion with cooking spray and place it in the air fryer. Cook for 15-20 minutes until golden brown, spritzing with spray halfway through.
- Serve and Enjoy: Remove the onion, let it cool slightly, and serve with your favorite dipping sauce.
Notes
Choose a large, fresh sweet onion for the best flavor. Ensure every petal is well-covered in the coating for maximum crunch.
