Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup cocoa powder
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • ¼ cup vegetable oil
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ cup hot water
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 23 tbsp milk
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • Green gel food coloring
  • Optional: edible green glitter, popping candy, mini marshmallows
  • Black cupcake liners
  • Pretzel sticks or licorice (for handles)
  • Halloween sprinkles


Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a cupcake tray with black liners.
  2. In a large bowl, sift together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk egg, sugar, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla until smooth.
  4. Slowly mix wet and dry ingredients, then stir in hot water until batter is thin and glossy.
  5. Pour into liners, filling each ⅔ full. Bake 18–20 minutes. Cool completely.
  6. Beat softened butter until fluffy (2 minutes). Gradually add powdered sugar.
  7. Add milk and vanilla, beating until creamy. Mix in green gel food coloring until vibrant.
  8. Add optional glitter, popping candy, or marshmallows for bubbling effect.
  9. Use a star piping tip to pipe frosting high like potion overflow.
  10. Add pretzel rods for handles, and top with themed sprinkles or candies.

Notes

Use gel food coloring for vibrant green frosting without thinning. Let cupcakes cool fully before frosting. Store frosted cupcakes chilled and bring to room temp before serving. Freeze unfrosted cupcakes up to 2 months for make-ahead ease.
