Ingredients
- 1 large onion (Vidalia or sweet onions work beautifully)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour for a gluten-free option)
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup buttermilk (or plant-based alternative)
- 1 cup breadcrumbs (Panko recommended)
- Optional: your favorite dipping sauce (like ranch or a spicy aioli)
Instructions
- Prepare the onion by cutting the top off and peeling away the outer layers.
- Make vertical slices from the top toward the root, ensuring the layers stay connected.
- Combine the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper in one bowl.
- Pour the buttermilk in a second bowl.
- Place the breadcrumbs in a third bowl.
- Turn the onion upside down and gently separate the petals.
- Dip the onion in buttermilk, coating each petal.
- Sprinkle the flour mixture over the onion, while pulling apart the petals.
- Re-dip the onion in buttermilk, then coat with breadcrumbs.
- Preheat the air fryer to 350°F (175°C) for 5 minutes.
- Lightly spray the onion with cooking oil for crispiness.
- Cook the onion in the air fryer for 15-20 minutes until golden brown, flipping halfway.
- Remove the blooming onion from the air fryer and cool for a few minutes before serving with dipping sauce.
