Ingredients

  • 1 large onion (Vidalia or sweet onions work beautifully)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour for a gluten-free option)
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup buttermilk (or plant-based alternative)
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (Panko recommended)
  • Optional: your favorite dipping sauce (like ranch or a spicy aioli)


Instructions

  1. Prepare the onion by cutting the top off and peeling away the outer layers.
  2. Make vertical slices from the top toward the root, ensuring the layers stay connected.
  3. Combine the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper in one bowl.
  4. Pour the buttermilk in a second bowl.
  5. Place the breadcrumbs in a third bowl.
  6. Turn the onion upside down and gently separate the petals.
  7. Dip the onion in buttermilk, coating each petal.
  8. Sprinkle the flour mixture over the onion, while pulling apart the petals.
  9. Re-dip the onion in buttermilk, then coat with breadcrumbs.
  10. Preheat the air fryer to 350°F (175°C) for 5 minutes.
  11. Lightly spray the onion with cooking oil for crispiness.
  12. Cook the onion in the air fryer for 15-20 minutes until golden brown, flipping halfway.
  13. Remove the blooming onion from the air fryer and cool for a few minutes before serving with dipping sauce.
