Description
A comforting casserole featuring tender potatoes, melty cheese, and savory kielbasa, perfect for cozy dinners and potlucks.
Ingredients
- 2 pounds potatoes (Yukon Gold or russet), peeled and sliced 1/4-inch
- 1 pound kielbasa-style beef or turkey sausage, sliced into 1/4-inch rounds
- 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella or Monterey Jack
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 1/2 cups whole milk (or 1 cup milk + 1/2 cup cream)
- 2 tablespoons butter, melted
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Brown the sausage in a skillet over medium heat until lightly browned (about 4–5 minutes). Remove and set aside.
- Sauté onion in the same skillet until translucent, about 5 minutes, then stir in garlic for 30 seconds.
- Make the sauce by sprinkling flour over onions, stirring for one minute, then gradually whisking in milk until smooth. Add mustard, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Cook until slightly thickened.
- Layer half of the potato slices in the dish, sprinkle with half the sausage, half the cheddar and mozzarella, then pour half the sauce. Repeat the layers finishing with cheese on top.
- Bake covered tightly with foil for 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake for another 15–20 minutes until potatoes are tender and the top is golden and bubbly.
- Rest for 10 minutes. Sprinkle with chopped parsley and serve warm.
