Description

A delightful festive ring with beautifully braided dough and a delectable filling, perfect for holiday gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup warm milk (about 110°F)
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ½ cup chopped nuts (e.g., walnuts, pecans, or almonds)
  • ½ cup dried fruit (e.g., cranberries, raisins, or apricots)
  • ½ cup unsweetened applesauce or fruit preserves (halal)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons milk (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions

  1. Combine warm milk and yeast in a large mixing bowl. Let sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. Mix flour, sugar, and salt in another bowl, then gradually add to the yeast mixture, followed by melted butter and eggs. Stir until a dough forms.
  3. Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the kneaded dough into a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  5. Mix brown sugar, cinnamon, chopped nuts, and dried fruit together for the filling.
  6. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out into a rectangle on a floured surface. Spread applesauce or fruit preserves evenly on it, then sprinkle the filling mixture on top.
  7. Roll the dough tightly from one side into a log, pinching the edges to seal.
  8. Cut the log in half lengthwise to reveal the filling. Twist the two halves around each other to form a ring, pinching the ends together.
  9. Place the ring onto a lined baking tray, cover with a towel, and let rise for another 30-45 minutes until puffy.
  10. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the ring for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.
  11. Mix powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth, then drizzle over the warm ring if desired.

Notes

Ensure a warm environment for dough rising and experiment with different fillings for personal touch.
