Description
A delightful festive ring with beautifully braided dough and a delectable filling, perfect for holiday gatherings.
Ingredients
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 cup warm milk (about 110°F)
- ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- ½ cup chopped nuts (e.g., walnuts, pecans, or almonds)
- ½ cup dried fruit (e.g., cranberries, raisins, or apricots)
- ½ cup unsweetened applesauce or fruit preserves (halal)
- 1 cup powdered sugar (optional)
- 2 tablespoons milk (optional)
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
Instructions
- Combine warm milk and yeast in a large mixing bowl. Let sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- Mix flour, sugar, and salt in another bowl, then gradually add to the yeast mixture, followed by melted butter and eggs. Stir until a dough forms.
- Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the kneaded dough into a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Mix brown sugar, cinnamon, chopped nuts, and dried fruit together for the filling.
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out into a rectangle on a floured surface. Spread applesauce or fruit preserves evenly on it, then sprinkle the filling mixture on top.
- Roll the dough tightly from one side into a log, pinching the edges to seal.
- Cut the log in half lengthwise to reveal the filling. Twist the two halves around each other to form a ring, pinching the ends together.
- Place the ring onto a lined baking tray, cover with a towel, and let rise for another 30-45 minutes until puffy.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the ring for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.
- Mix powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth, then drizzle over the warm ring if desired.
Notes
