Description
A cozy blend of French onion flavor and sloppy joes, perfect for fall dinners and game nights.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
- 3 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (or 1/2 tsp dried)
- 1/4 cup beef broth
- 1/2 cup beef consommé or extra broth
- 3/4 cup tomato sauce
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- 8 soft slider buns or sandwich rolls
- 1 cup shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese (optional)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
Instructions
- In a large skillet, melt butter with olive oil over medium heat. Add sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook slowly until deep golden brown (30–40 minutes), stirring occasionally. Deglaze with a splash of beef broth toward the end.
- In a separate skillet, brown the ground beef over medium-high heat, breaking it up with a spoon. Drain any excess fat if desired.
- Add minced garlic to the browned beef and cook for 1 minute. Stir in the caramelized onions, tomato sauce, beef consommé, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, soy sauce, Dijon mustard, and thyme. Bring to a gentle simmer and reduce heat to low. Simmer uncovered for 10–15 minutes until thickened. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Toast the buns lightly. Spoon the beef mixture onto the bottom half of each bun. Top with shredded cheese if using, then the top bun.
- For an extra-decadent finish, place the open-faced sandwiches under a broiler for 1–2 minutes to melt the cheese, watching carefully to avoid burning.
Notes
Caramelize onions slowly for deeper flavor. Prepare the filling in advance to save time.
