Description

A delicious and healthy twist on the classic blooming onion, made in an air fryer for a crispy texture without the excess oil.

Ingredients

  • 1 large sweet onion (like Vidalia)
  • 1/2 cup whole wheat flour (or gluten-free flour for a gluten-free version)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (use gluten-free if desired)
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 egg (or egg substitute for a vegan version)
  • 1/4 cup milk (or any plant-based milk)
  • Olive oil spray

Instructions

  1. Prepare the onion: Peel the onion and cut off the top and the bottom, ensuring the base remains intact. Make vertical cuts around the onion to create “petals.” Aim for 8-12 cuts, but don’t go too deep; you want them to be connected.
  2. Make the batter: In a bowl, mix together the whole wheat flour, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper. This will be your seasoning blend.
  3. Prepare the dipping mixture: In another bowl, whisk together the egg and milk until well combined.
  4. Coat the onion: Dip the prepared onion into the flour mixture, making sure to coat all the petals. Then, dip it into the egg mixture, allowing any excess to drip off, and finally into the breadcrumbs.
  5. Air fry the onion: Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Spray the onion with olive oil, then cook for about 15-20 minutes, or until crispy and fully cooked.
  6. Serve: Once ready, let it cool slightly before serving. It pairs wonderfully with your favorite dipping sauces.

Notes

Choose sweet onions for the best flavor and adjust seasoning as desired. Can be made gluten-free or vegan.
