Description

A visually stunning and delicious appetizer, the Easy Air Fryer Blooming Onion features crispy petals and a tender inside, perfect for dipping and sharing.

Ingredients

  • 1 large onion (Vidalia or yellow)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour for a gluten-free option)
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (preferably panko for extra crunch)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional for heat)
  • Cooking spray (for air frying)
  • Dipping sauce (ranch or your favorite)

Instructions

  1. Start by removing the outer skin of the onion. Cut about 1 inch off the top and leave the root end intact.
  2. Place the onion cut side down and carefully make deep cuts in a petal shape, slicing down but not all the way through to the root. Aim for about 12-16 petals. Gently pull the petals apart to create a blooming effect.
  3. In one bowl, combine the flour, garlic powder, paprika, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper.
  4. Beat the eggs until well combined in a second bowl.
  5. Place the breadcrumbs in a third bowl.
  6. Dip the onion bloom into the flour mixture, coating it thoroughly.
  7. Next, dip it into the beaten eggs, allowing any excess to drip off.
  8. Finally, coat it with the breadcrumbs, ensuring every petal is covered. For extra crunch, gently press the breadcrumbs into the onion.
  9. Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C).
  10. Lightly spray the breaded onion with cooking spray to help it crisp up during cooking.
  11. Place the onion in the air fryer basket, cut side up. Cook for about 15-20 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. You may need to check halfway through and reapply cooking spray if needed.
  12. Once the Easy Air Fryer Blooming Onion is golden and crispy, carefully remove it from the air fryer.
  13. Serve it warm with your favorite dipping sauce and enjoy the compliments!
