Description
Cozy homemade crumpets served with Marmite, perfect for autumn baking.
Ingredients
- 250g (2 cups) strong white bread flour
- 250ml (1 cup) warm milk (ensure it’s halal)
- 250ml (1 cup) warm water
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon instant yeast
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- Vegetable oil (for greasing the rings)
- Marmite (adjust to taste)
- Butter (for spreading)
Instructions
- Prepare the yeast mixture: In a bowl, combine the warm milk, warm water, and sugar. Sprinkle the instant yeast over the top and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes, until it becomes frothy.
- Mix the dry ingredients: In a separate large mixing bowl, whisk together the strong white bread flour, salt, and baking powder.
- Combine mixtures: Pour the frothy yeast mixture into the dry ingredients. Mix until you have a smooth batter.
- Let it rise: Cover the mixing bowl with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and place it in a warm, draft-free area. Allow the batter to rise for about an hour, or until it has doubled in size.
- Heat the griddle: Preheat a non-stick griddle or skillet over medium heat. Grease the crumpet rings with vegetable oil and place them on the griddle.
- Cook the crumpets: Pour about 1/4 cup of batter into each ring, being careful not to overfill. Cook for about 7-8 minutes or until bubbles form on the surface. Flip the crumpets gently and cook for another 2-3 minutes on the other side.
- Repeat: Remove the rings carefully and continue cooking the remaining batter, greasing the rings as needed.
- Serve warm: Stack your warm crumpets on a plate, slather them with butter, and generously spread Marmite on top.
Notes
