Description

A comforting Crispy Steak Melt featuring tender steak, melted cheese, and sautéed vegetables on crusty bread.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound flank steak (sliced thinly against the grain)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper (to taste)
  • 1 medium onion (thinly sliced)
  • 1 bell pepper (sliced, any color)
  • 2 cups shredded cheese (such as cheddar or mozzarella, or a mix)
  • 4 large slices of crusty bread (ciabatta or sourdough recommended)
  • 2 tablespoons butter (softened)
  • Optional: fresh herbs like thyme or parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prep the steak: In a skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Season the thinly sliced flank steak with salt and pepper. Sear the steak for about 3-4 minutes until browned and cooked to your desired level of doneness. Remove from the skillet and let rest.
  2. Cook the veggies: In the same skillet, add the sliced onion and bell pepper. Sauté for approximately 5-7 minutes until they become soft and slightly caramelized. Remove from the heat and set aside.
  3. Assemble the melt: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Take your slices of bread and spread a thin layer of softened butter on one side of each slice. Place the unbuttered side up on a baking sheet.
  4. Layer the ingredients: Start by layering the cooked steak on each slice of bread, followed by the sautéed veggies. Top with a generous handful of shredded cheese.
  5. Bake to perfection: Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for about 10-12 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbling and the edges of the bread are golden and crispy.
  6. Serve and garnish: Once baked, remove the Crispy Steak Melts from the oven. Top with fresh herbs if desired, cut into halves or quarters, and serve hot to your hungry guests!

Notes

Choose flank steak for flavor, slice against the grain for tenderness, and allow cheese to melt fully for gooeyness.
