Description
Delicious, golden-brown crispy onion rings made healthier in an air fryer, perfect for cozy gatherings or game day.
Ingredients
- 2 large sweet onions (such as Vidalia or Walla Walla)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour (or a gluten-free alternative)
- 1 cup breadcrumbs (Panko is recommended for extra crunch)
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 egg
- 1 cup buttermilk (or a dairy-free alternative)
- Olive oil spray or cooking spray
Instructions
- Prep the onions: Peel and slice the onions into ¼ inch thick rings. Separate the rings and place them in a large bowl.
- Soak the onions: Pour the buttermilk over the onion rings, making sure they’re fully submerged. Let them soak for at least 30 minutes.
- Prepare the dredging station: In one bowl, combine the flour, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. In another bowl, beat the egg.
- Coat the onion rings: Remove each onion ring from the buttermilk, allowing the excess to drip off. Dip it into the flour mixture, then into the egg, and finally into the breadcrumbs.
- Preheat the air fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for about 5 minutes.
- Air fry the rings: Lightly spray the air fryer basket with olive oil spray, arrange the onion rings in a single layer, and spray the tops with more oil.
- Cook for about 10-12 minutes, flipping halfway through until golden brown and crispy.
- Serve and enjoy warm with your favorite dipping sauce.
Notes
Do not overcrowd the basket for optimal crispiness. Experiment with seasonings and use Panko breadcrumbs for extra crunch.
