Description

Delicious, golden-brown crispy onion rings made healthier in an air fryer, perfect for cozy gatherings or game day.

Ingredients

  • 2 large sweet onions (such as Vidalia or Walla Walla)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (or a gluten-free alternative)
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (Panko is recommended for extra crunch)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup buttermilk (or a dairy-free alternative)
  • Olive oil spray or cooking spray

Instructions

  1. Prep the onions: Peel and slice the onions into ¼ inch thick rings. Separate the rings and place them in a large bowl.
  2. Soak the onions: Pour the buttermilk over the onion rings, making sure they’re fully submerged. Let them soak for at least 30 minutes.
  3. Prepare the dredging station: In one bowl, combine the flour, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. In another bowl, beat the egg.
  4. Coat the onion rings: Remove each onion ring from the buttermilk, allowing the excess to drip off. Dip it into the flour mixture, then into the egg, and finally into the breadcrumbs.
  5. Preheat the air fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for about 5 minutes.
  6. Air fry the rings: Lightly spray the air fryer basket with olive oil spray, arrange the onion rings in a single layer, and spray the tops with more oil.
  7. Cook for about 10-12 minutes, flipping halfway through until golden brown and crispy.
  8. Serve and enjoy warm with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

Do not overcrowd the basket for optimal crispiness. Experiment with seasonings and use Panko breadcrumbs for extra crunch.
