Delicious bagels filled with a creamy cheese swirl and crispy bacon, perfect for weekend breakfasts.
Ingredients
- 3 1/2 cups bread flour (or all-purpose for a slightly softer crust)
- 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
- 1 1/4 cups warm water (about 105–110°F)
- 1 tbsp granulated sugar
- 1 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese, divided
- 6 oz cream cheese, softened
- 6 slices smoked turkey bacon, cooked until crisp and chopped
- 1 egg (for egg wash) beaten with 1 tbsp water
- Optional: everything bagel seasoning or sesame seeds for topping
Instructions
- Activate the yeast: In a small bowl, stir warm water and sugar, sprinkle yeast over the top, and let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.
- Make the dough: In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Add yeast mixture and oil, mixing until a shaggy dough forms. Knead on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let rise 1 hour until doubled.
- Prepare the filling: In a bowl, beat softened cream cheese with 1/2 cup shredded cheddar until smooth. Fold in chopped crisp turkey bacon and set aside.
- Punch down dough and divide into 8 equal pieces. Flatten each piece, place 1–2 tbsp of the cream cheese mixture in the center, fold the edges over to seal, and shape into rounds.
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Place shaped bagels on a parchment-lined tray, cover, and rest 20–30 minutes.
- Boil bagels: Bring a large pot of water to a gentle boil and add 1 tbsp sugar. Boil bagels 1 minute per side, remove with a slotted spoon, and place back on the parchment.
- Brush with egg wash and sprinkle remaining cheddar and any seeds.
- Bake: Bake 18–22 minutes until golden and cheese is bubbly. Cool on a rack for 10 minutes before slicing.
Notes
Dough should be tacky but not sticky; add flour a tablespoon at a time if it’s too wet. For best texture, slice and toast before serving.
