Ingredients
- 2 large sweet onions (yellow or Vidalia)
- 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- ½ cup cornstarch
- 1 cup buttermilk (or dairy-free alternative)
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp black pepper
- ½ tsp salt
- Neutral oil for frying (avocado or sunflower recommended)
- Optional: cayenne or chipotle powder for heat
Instructions
- Peel and quarter the onions. Slice into bite-sized petals and separate the layers.
- Place onions in a bowl and soak with buttermilk for at least 30 minutes.
- In a separate bowl, combine flour, cornstarch, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
- Drain onions from buttermilk. Dredge in flour mixture, return to buttermilk, then dredge again. Press to coat well.
- Heat oil to 350°F. Fry onion petals in small batches for 2–3 minutes per side, until golden and crisp.
- Drain on paper towels. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce like creamy chipotle or ranch.
- For a lighter version, air fry at 375°F for 12–14 minutes, flipping halfway through.
Notes
These bites reheat well in the oven or air fryer and are great with zesty sauces. Soaking in buttermilk ensures sweet, tender flavor without harshness.
