Ingredients
- 6 medium-sized apples (preferably Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix)
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- ½ cup rolled oats
- ½ cup unsalted butter, melted (or halal-style margarine)
- ¼ cup packed brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- A pinch of salt
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Wash and peel the apples, then core and slice them thinly.
- Combine the sliced apples with lemon juice, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), and cornstarch in a large bowl. Mix well to ensure the apples are evenly coated.
- In another bowl, combine flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, melted butter, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Mix until crumbly.
- Spread the apple mixture evenly into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Sprinkle the crust mixture over the apple filling, ensuring it’s evenly distributed.
- Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown.
- Allow the dessert to cool slightly before serving.
Notes
For a crisper topping, par-bake the crust before adding the apples. Makes great leftovers.
