Description
Enjoy these warm, comforting Air Fryer Hush Puppies that are crispy outside and fluffy inside, perfect for fall gatherings.
Ingredients
- 1 cup cornmeal
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 cup buttermilk (or plant-based alternative)
- 1 egg
- 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
- 1/4 cup corn kernels
- Cooking spray or olive oil for greasing
Instructions
- Mix dry ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cornmeal, all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, black pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder. Stir until well mixed.
- Combine wet ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and egg until fully blended.
- Combine mixtures: Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients, stirring gently just until combined. Be careful not to overmix—this will help keep your hush puppies light and fluffy.
- Add vegetables: Fold in the chopped onions and corn kernels, ensuring an even distribution throughout the batter.
- Preheat the air fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 370°F (185°C).
- Form the hush puppies: Using a spoon or a cookie scoop, drop rounded tablespoons of the batter onto a plate, spaced slightly apart.
- Air fry: Lightly coat the air fryer basket with cooking spray or olive oil. Place the hush puppies in a single layer in the basket and air fry for 10–12 minutes, flipping halfway through, until they are golden brown and cooked through.
- Serve: Once done, remove from the air fryer and enjoy these delicious bites warm, perhaps with a dipping sauce like ranch or tartar sauce!
Notes
These hush puppies are best enjoyed fresh, but can be refrigerated for up to 3 days. To reheat, air fry at 370°F (185°C) for about 5 minutes.
