A decadent twist on the classic British Welsh Rarebit, featuring melty cheese and savory spices, perfect for cozy fall evenings.
Ingredients
- 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, grated
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- ½ cup milk (or a dairy-free alternative)
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (ensure it’s halal)
- 1 teaspoon mustard powder
- ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust to taste)
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 4 slices of thick-cut bread (whole grain or sourdough recommended)
- Fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter.
- Add the flour, whisking constantly until you create a smooth paste (roux).
- Pour in the milk gradually, whisking until thickened and smooth.
- Stir in the grated cheddar cheese until fully melted and creamy.
- Add Worcestershire sauce, mustard powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper. Combine until well mixed.
- Preheat your air fryer to 350°F (175°C).
- Place your thick-cut bread slices on a flat surface and spoon the cheesy mixture over each slice.
- Carefully place the bread slices in the air fryer basket in a single layer.
- Cook for about 5-7 minutes or until the cheese is bubbly and slightly golden.
- Remove the Welsh Rarebit and sprinkle fresh parsley on top to garnish. Serve warm and enjoy!
Notes
For a thicker cheese sauce, add more cheese or let it simmer longer. Use freshly grated cheese for better melting.
