Description
A delicious and crispy Air Fryer Blooming Onion coated in flavorful spices, perfect for gatherings this fall.
Ingredients
- 1 large sweet onion (like Vidalia or Walla Walla)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour blend)
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup breadcrumbs (panko for extra crunch)
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- ½ tsp cayenne pepper (optional)
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- Cooking spray or olive oil
Instructions
- Prepare the Onion: Remove the outer skin from the onion. Trim the top, leaving the root intact, then place the onion root-side down. Make eight vertical cuts, about 1/2 inch apart, from the top down, being careful not to cut through the root. Gently separate the petals with your fingers to create the blooming effect.
- Make the Breading Station: In three separate bowls, set up your breading station: In the first bowl, mix the flour with salt, black pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder. In the second bowl, beat the eggs until well combined. In the third bowl, combine the breadcrumbs with a pinch of salt and cayenne pepper (if using).
- Coat the Onion: First, place the onion in the flour mixture, ensuring it gets completely coated, including between the petals. Next, dip the floured onion into the beaten eggs, allowing excess to drip off. Finally, coat the onion with breadcrumbs, pressing them in gently to stick well.
- Air Fry the Onion: Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Spray the onion generously with cooking oil, then place it in the air fryer basket. Cook for 25-30 minutes, or until the onion is golden brown and crispy. Be sure to check halfway through and give it a gentle shake for even cooking.
- Serve and Enjoy: Once done, remove your air-fried masterpiece and let it cool for a few minutes. Serve it warm with your favorite dipping sauce, like ranch or spicy mayo!
Notes
For best results, use large sweet onions. Adjust cooking time depending on air fryer model. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
