Description
This sensational Air Fryer Blooming Onion is crispy and golden, making it a perfect appetizer for gatherings. Serve it with a zesty dip for a delightful treat!
Ingredients
- 1 large sweet onion (like Vidalia or Walla Walla)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour (substitute gluten-free flour if needed)
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 large egg
- ½ cup milk (halal dairy or plant-based alternative)
- 1 cup breadcrumbs (use gluten-free if needed)
- Non-stick cooking spray (for light coating)
Instructions
- Prepare the onion: Peel the onion and slice off the top (about 1 inch) to create a flat surface. Carefully cut downwards in a crisscross pattern, making about 12-16 sections—don’t cut all the way to the bottom!
- Create the coating: In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and salt. In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg and milk until well combined.
- Coat the onion: Dip the onion into the egg mixture, ensuring all petals are coated. Next, dip into the flour mixture, covering every petal. For extra crunch, dip back into the egg mixture and then into the breadcrumbs.
- Prepare for air frying: Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C) and lightly spray the coated onion with non-stick cooking spray.
- Air Fry: Place the onion in the air fryer basket. Cook for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy, turning halfway for even cooking.
- Serve: Remove the onion from the air fryer, let it cool slightly, then serve with your favorite dipping sauce.
Notes
Choose a sweet onion for the best flavor and make sure to coat each layer well for maximum crunchiness.
