Description

A quick and wholesome falafel recipe made in an air fryer, perfect for cozy gatherings during fall.

Ingredients

  • 1 can (15 oz) chickpeas, drained and rinsed
  • 1 small onion, roughly chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon coriander
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (or a halal alternative)
  • 1/4 cup flour (gluten-free or chickpea flour for alternatives)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the chickpeas: In a food processor, combine the drained chickpeas, chopped onion, garlic, parsley, cilantro, cumin, coriander, baking powder, salt, and pepper. Pulse until the mixture is coarsely blended but not pureed.
  2. Form the mixture: Transfer the mixture to a bowl and stir in the flour until combined. This will help bind the falafels. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed.
  3. Shape the falafel: Scoop out about two tablespoons of the mixture and roll them into balls or flatten them slightly into patties. You should get about 10-12 falafel pieces from this recipe.
  4. Preheat the air fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C). This quick step is essential for achieving that golden brown exterior.
  5. Air fry the falafel: Spray or lightly coat the falafel with olive oil. Place the falafel in the air fryer basket in a single layer, ensuring they aren’t overcrowded. Air fry for 10-12 minutes, flipping halfway through, until they’re crispy and golden.
  6. Serve and enjoy: Once cooked, serve the falafel warm with your favorite dips like tahini or yogurt sauce, alongside fresh vegetables or in pita bread.

Notes

For extra structure, consider chilling the falafel mixture for 30 minutes before shaping. A light spray of oil before frying helps achieve a crispy texture.
